Liyu Wang is a certified data scientist and a licensed mechanical engineer (P.E.)

My goal as a data scientist is to bring values to stakeholders by unveiling the un-told stories from data. I have four years' experience in data analytics, data science, and machine learning, specialized in time series and relational databases. I have applied my skills with Python (pandas, numpy, scipy, scikit-learn, matplotlib, seaborn, plotly, TensorFlow), R, PowerBI, SQL to create opportunities in industrial applications from finance, manufacturing, oil and gas, utlities, and consumer electronics. Read a research report I wrote using innovation metrics to predict 5-year revenue growth pattern with a ROC-AUC of 0.78 and to predict next-year revenue with a median absolute percentage error of 8%.

In addition, I have 13 years' hands-on experience in design, prototyping, testing, and control of electromechanical and robotic systems. My CAD and CAM skills are supported by Solidworks Certification (CSWA), and Autodesk certificates on Advanced CAM Programming. I use Solidworks, Fusion 360, and AutoCAD.

I have two years' experience in management consulting, private market analysis and early-stage startup evaluation. I worked on monthly deal flow of early-stage startups for an asset management investor, and weekly innovation consulting for EPSON and NS Solutions. In 18 month's time, I scouted 235 startups for five global companies including Nomura (NRI), EPSON, Fujitsu, Suntory, and NS Solutions. My knowledge on innovation management and entrepreneurship are supported by four programme certificates from Said Business School (Oxford), Haas School of Businss (Berkeley), Sutardja Center for Entrepreneurship & Technology (Berkeley) and Berkeley Law.

My academic research primarily concerns physically-adaptive machines using an approach of "on-the-fly fabrication". My other research interests include soft-material robotics, biologically-inspired robotics, fault diagnosis and anomaly detection, locomotion biomechanics, and open-source robotics. My work has been published in a book Soft-Material Robotics (ISBN: 9781680832648, sold on Barnes & Noble, Amazon, Walmart and ebay) and 44 technical papers, some of which were featured on BBC, New Scientist, NBC, Daily Mail, and Discovery Channel. Prior to research, I had two years' sales experience of medical devices. I sold the first Chinese hemaetology analyzers to West Europe.

I am a Finalist of The Technical Analyst Award 2021 for my specialty in analyzing pre-seed, seed, and early-stage startups. I am also a recipient of Siemens Fellowship (2016), Swiss National Science Foundation (SNF) Postdoc Mobility Fellowship (2016, 2014), IET Travel Award (2016), US National Postdoc Association Travel Award (2016), 国家优秀自费留学生奖 Chinese National Award for Outstanding Doctoral Student (2013), Sloane Robinson Scholarship (2006), and European Commission Erasmus Mundus Scholarship (2006).

I have a postdoctoral training in electrical engineering and computer sciences from the University of California Berkeley, hold a doctoral degree (Dr. sc.) in mechanical engineering from ETH Zurich, a master degree (MSc) in biomedical engineering from the University of Oxford, and a bachelor degree (BEng) in opto-electronic information engineering from 浙江大 Zhejiang University.

Educated in four leading institutions across three continents and lived in five countries, I have an international horizon and knowledge in culture, work, life and mentality in China, West Europe and North America. I have also travelled to 20+ other countries and written 20 articles about my journey for one of the largest Chinese newspapers 环球时报 Global Times. In my spare time, I train Muay Thai and have completed 800 hours of training, in pursuit of my first match.
